Who it’s for
My services aren’t just about tax returns. Every business needs its books kept up to date, and it’s the best way to prepare for the next tax season. Bookkeeping is a good fit if you:
- run a small business or work for yourself, and the paperwork keeps piling up
- scramble to find receipts and numbers every spring
- want to know how your business is really doing during the year, not just at tax time
- have fallen behind and need your books brought up to date
What’s included
- Recording your sales, income and expenses
- Matching your records to your bank and credit card statements
- Sorting expenses into the right categories for tax
- Tracking the GST/HST you charge and pay
- Catching up on past months or years that fell behind
- Books that are ready for your year-end tax return
What to bring
- Bank and credit card statements for your business accounts
- Sales records or invoices you’ve sent
- Receipts and bills for business expenses
- Any bookkeeping files or spreadsheets you already keep
- Your GST/HST number, if you have one
A shoebox of receipts is a fine place to start.
Why it matters at tax time
When your books are current, your business tax return takes less time, there’s less chance of missing an expense you could have claimed, and you have the records ready if the CRA ever asks questions.
Bookkeeping questions
What’s the difference between bookkeeping and doing my taxes?
Bookkeeping is recording what happens in your business day to day: sales, expenses and payments. Your tax return uses those records to work out what you owe. Good books make the return faster and more accurate, and they help you see how the business is doing between tax seasons.
I’m months behind. Is that a problem?
No. Catching up is a common reason people call. We’ll start with your bank statements and work forward from there.
Do I have to keep paper receipts?
You need to keep records that support your income and expenses, and the CRA generally expects them to be kept for six years. Clear digital copies are usually fine. Ask me what works best for your business.
Can you do my payroll and taxes too?
Yes. Bookkeeping, payroll and business tax work best together, and you’ll only deal with one person.
