Benefits and Tax Credits Review in Toronto

Are you receiving all the benefits and credits you’re entitled to? Many people miss out without knowing it. Danny reviews your situation and helps you apply for anything missing.

Who it’s for

  • families with children under 18
  • people living with a disability, or supporting a family member who is
  • people with low or modest income, renters and seniors
  • anyone who hasn’t filed a return in a while, since most benefits depend on filing

Benefits and credits I check

Canada Child Benefit

A tax-free monthly payment for families with children under 18. The amount depends on your family income, so both parents need to file every year to keep it coming.

Disability Tax Credit

A non-refundable credit for people with a severe and prolonged impairment, or the family member who supports them. It needs form T2201, certified by a medical practitioner. Once approved, you can ask the CRA to adjust past years, going back up to 10 years. It can also open the door to other programs, like the Child Disability Benefit and the Registered Disability Savings Plan.

GST/HST credit and Ontario Trillium Benefit

Payments for people with low or modest income. The Ontario Trillium Benefit includes energy and property tax help, so your rent or property tax amounts matter. Both are based on your tax return, so you only get them if you file.

Others

Depending on your situation there may be other credits, like the Canada Workers Benefit. I’ll go through what applies to you.

What to bring

  • Your latest Notice of Assessment and any benefit notices from the CRA
  • Your rent receipts or property tax bill
  • Details of your children and their dates of birth
  • For the Disability Tax Credit: any medical information you have, and the name of your doctor or other medical practitioner

How it works

We go through your situation together. I check which benefits and credits you may qualify for, make sure your returns are filed so they can be paid, and help you complete and send any applications.

The CRA decides who qualifies and how much they receive. I’ll make sure your application is complete and accurate.

Benefits and credits questions

Do I have to file a tax return to get benefits?

For most of them, yes. The CRA uses your return to work out the GST/HST credit, Canada Child Benefit and Ontario Trillium Benefit, even if you had little or no income.

Can I get benefits for past years I missed?

Often, yes. Filing your missing returns can restart benefits and may bring back payments for past years. How far back depends on the benefit.

Who can certify the Disability Tax Credit form?

A medical practitioner who knows your condition, such as a doctor or nurse practitioner. Some sections can be certified by other specialists depending on the impairment. I’ll help you with the parts you fill in.
